The week of 7 September 2024 is now available

A fun family fishing holiday with carp to 37 lbs and cats to ah… really heavy!

This week we welcomed Simon and his wife Kerry along with twins Alex and Jaime. All the boys would be fishing this week and to get them off on the right foot, they booked me for a day’s help.

Simon is an experienced angler but Beausoleil was going to provide some challenges that he’d not met before. It was also very different to the large, low stock syndicate lake he knew well. The boys mostly fish local day ticket waters and a club lake and again this was going to be different for them. On the technical front, they were well prepared and organised thanks to our YouTube channel but YouTube is just a tiny glimpse into the work we do here.  The biggest shock for Simon was the savage nature of the lake bed and just how rapidly it changes in underwater topography. For the boys, the biggest shock was just how many hooks they were going to need. Sometimes they use the same hook for weeks! They learned loads in a very short period of time and had no issues putting it into practice.

I hadn’t heard any news  when I rocked up on Tuesday afternoon. While I was busy focusing on prepping the rowing boat to take an oxygen reading, I suddenly realised that Alex was holding a landing net and he had something safely ensconced within. Oh, nice timing! Simon and I helped Alex with the fish holding. It’s all a bit different when they are 2 – 3 times larger than what you are familiar with! In the end we got him there and we got a nice trophy shot for him. Well done mate!

Simon had had two mid/upper 30s and Sammy which he was very pleased with but Jamie was yet to get off the mark. They only really had enough fishing gear for two anglers so Jamie was just sharing gear and doing a few hours here and there. He was happy though and was confident he’d have one soon enough. Jamie’s laid back approach obviously worked for him as his first one weighed in at 35lbs! Nice 👍

Big Catfish

None of the group had any catfish experience and I knew that if they hooked a big un, they were in for a bit of a shock. Simon made me laugh during the tuition when he asked: ‘so do the big cats fight hard then Matt?’ Ah yeah mate, they will pull your arms off!

Just before he hooked the catfish, Simon’s other rod let out an interesting sequence of beeps but he decided to leave it. There was no doubt about the bite the catfish gave so he wound down and connected. During the battle the other rod continued sounding strange but luckily Alex was about to lend a hand and when he wound down and hit, it was a double hookup: 1 carp, 1 big catfish.

All good fun in daylight but it was very dark and well past 11pm. The guys did incredibly well to safely bank both fish. The catfish took 30 minutes to subdue, which isn’t too bad at all. They didn’t weigh it but I guessed the cat from the pictures to be 70 – 80 lbs. Excellent work!

Rigs & bait

It was really great to see how well they got on with my simple but effective approach. They followed my advice to the letter and they caught steadily all week long. Textbook stuff ⭐ On the rig front they used the multi rig because it makes changing hooks quick and convenient but they also used some of my deadly D rigs. Simon was tasked with doing all the rig prep… well done dad!

The whole family had a lovely time and I’m delighted they enjoyed the place. They only fished one night in the end and certainly didn’t fish it hard. Most of the fish actually came during relatively short evening sessions. Mum was very happy to see her boys happy and when she wasn’t looking after the family she had loads of books to read. Congratulations on all your captures guys 👏 You did great 👍
