The week of 7 September 2024 is now available

A tricky week’s fishing with carp to 34 lbs.

This week we welcomed Trevor and Liz to the venue. This would be their 4th trip to France and Trevor has been fishing for 50 years but they booked me for the tuition on Sunday and we focused on the basics of what they needed for a successful week. We had a fun day together and the guys quickly understood that taking on Beausoleil was going to be a big step up for them. They’d mostly be fishing days and evenings and wanted to make a few trips out while they were here.

On Monday evening they banked a 34lbs mirror and good old Sammy. Liz was shocked and amazed by just how hard and fast he moves. I think Trevor thought that Liz was being too gentle with him but later in the week he had the Sammy experience himself and he was in for quite a shock… Sammy really does pull back!

Spawning

The carp spawned on Tuesday and when they left on Saturday I could clearly see new eggs on an oar so the carp did have another go. After the spawning event, nothing else was caught.

Fishery management

It’s always our aim to not disturb guests in any way during their holiday but sometimes the timing of certain tasks is beyond our control. We needed to be on site to apply a treatment of live bacteria to the lake using the boat on Wednesday evening from 8 – 11pm. Although they were able to continue fishing during this treatment, it was a disruption and they chose to wind in earlier and have a glass of wine. We were back from 10am to 1pm on Thursday for more of the same but they’d already planned a trip to the market in Chateau Gontier so it was not an issue. We are grateful to Trevor and Liz for allowing us to carry out this treatment. There’s no effect on the fish directly and it’s all part of our long term goal of reducing the level of green algae and in turn stabilise the oxygen levels to provide more consistent angling throughout the season.

Trevor was disappointed not to catch anything larger, or up his PB but, at the end of the day, that’s fishing. Despite the number of years he’d been fishing, they learned a great deal in a week and we wish them all the best for the future.

General comments

We received a very warm welcome from Matt & Irène who are very passionate in what they do and deservedly so. A couple of maintenance tasks were undertaken during our stay which they were very apologetic for. Overall a relaxing break.
