A tricky week’s fishing with carp to 38lbs

This week we welcomed Mark, Steve and his son to the venue for their first trip to us. They had booked me for 1.5 days support so I spent most of Sunday with them. It was clear from the start that Beausoleil was very different from what they knew but they were here to learn. Every tuition is customised to the anglers and so once we worked out what areas we needed to focus on, that’s where we spent the time.

What a week! Matt’s tuition was superb and really took us out of our comfort zone. We will take so much with us that will help us improve in the future. We’ve had a real adventure and now can’t wait to come back! Thanks so much Matt & Irène. We’ve had an unforgettable week.

Steve caught the first carp (32lbs) late on Tuesday but by Wednesday, his son and Mark were yet to get off the mark. Even the kittens were being elusive so it was an indication that something was amiss. Once we sorted those issues out, Mark banked the sturgeon twice and young Steve banked some kittens.

Mark was so convinced that he’d finally hooked a good carp on Thursday night and after a really good scrap he was gutted when Sammy’s nose popped up for the 2nd time that night! Everyone is happy to catch Sammy the first time but once you’ve caught him once, the second capture is always a bit of a let down. When Sammy is on, he’s mad for it and he really does fight hard and considering how long he’s been here and how old he is, he’s in amazing condition. He’s always been a low to mid twenty and will always be that size.  I have no idea how old he is but I bet he’s 30 years old… or more!

On Thursday, Big Steve moved from the Big Double, over to the Point swims and began exploring the island margin that’s opposite. With his newfound feature finding skills, he located a nice strip of clean gravel, 2m from the margin. Steve was casting all his rigs into position and it’s a tricky cast to this margin but after a few goes at getting the distance right, he got the rig into position and then had the confidence to sit on his hands and wait for the magic to happen.

Around 3am, he had a ripper of a take and was connected to a very angry common. The battle continued for a good 15 minutes until he could finally slip it over the net cord. On the scales it was a new PB of 38 lbs. It was great to see Steve successfully putting into practice all of his newfound skills. That’s the great thing about a day’s tuition with me on the Sunday, you’ve then got the whole week to put into practice some skills that are new or that you’re able to improve on.

The weather was quite bad yet again this week with some seriously heavy rain, hail and it was not very warm. No wonder the carp didn’t fancy having their picture taken! Beausoleil is a tricky venue at the best of times but all the lakes around the area have fished hard this week. Even the easy ones!

The guys worked hard at their angling and most importantly, they didn’t let the conditions, or the venue, break them and this experience will also help them move forward with their angling back home. It was a real pleasure guys and thanks for trusting me on your carping journey 😊
