A game of two halves this week with carp from 30 lbs to 48 lbs!

This week we welcomed Dirk & Johan to the venue for the first time. It was also their first fishing trip outside of Belgium so this was a big step for them. Dirk speaks both English and French very well but Johan doesn’t speak either so direct communication was tricky.

The tuition started straight away on arrival and after a 3 hr setup session, they had the knowledge and the tools to fish safely and effectively from the beginning.

Dirk had a superb start with 4 fish before breakfast on the first night including 2 x 40s! Wow! After a very long drive and a 3 hr chat, to then bank 4 fish on a water that’s completely new and completely different to what he was used to, just wow, what a result!

I was back on Monday for part 2 of the tuition session. We covered as much as we could in the time we had, focusing as much on how to make Dirk more successful at home as how to tackle Beausoleil.

Dirk then went on to catch another 3 good carp but after wednesday, nothing was caught. They didn’t even catch any small catfish… (all week!). The weather became unseasonably cold with cold frosts and temps barely making double figures by the afternoon. We had better weather in January!

Dirk and Johan did their very best to trick one more carp, they watched the water for any sign of activity, explored the features, rotated spots, but it just wasn’t meant to be.

Bait & Rigs

All carp were caught using my blowback multi rigs using either Scopex Squid bottom baits or tiger nuts. The guys used plenty of Scopex Squid pellets, flakes and Nash particles to prime the spots. While the fish were cacheable, this worked very well. With so many tiny details that can make or break a session, it’s so important on a week like this to get off on the right foot from the off as the windows of opportunity can come and go. The guys worked very had for their bites and made the most of the opportunities.

Congrats to Dirk on some beautiful captures and thanks for trusting me on his journey. We look forward to seeing the guys again for another go on this beautiful but challenging little water.
